What is the limit on domain names

Postby Myname » Mon Jul 03, 2006 1:50 pm

Hi Guys
I was hoping to reg a domain name something like co.ie
But got back a cryptic reply. that you can't reg a high level domain name
but .ie is a high level domain name and others are using it
why would the co be considered a high level domain when it is behind the .ie
and yet co.com is allowed and co.org

can any of you guys help me understand why the .ie are so restrictive.
or am I to presume that ireland will wait till we are 20 years behind everybody else before we become progressive. are we born with this mentality that we must be last in everything we do.

Thanks for reading my ramblings and maybe you write your own

Hello,

The domain registry only allow 2 letter .ie domains with a letter and a number. For example:

u2.ie
02.ie
3g.ie

If you register co.ie then you could resell www.anything.co.ie, if I was running the .ie domain registry I can tell you I wouldn't like anyone to have that name either! :-D Surely enough the IEDR have blocked com.ie too.
Thanks

Some countries like Ireland and the Netherlands just use flat domains, However ICANN has recommended that Country Code Top Level domains should be subdivided further eg: .co.uk, .nhs.uk, .com.au, .org.au

Given the proximity to the .uk domain, I guess if someone used .co.ie it would lead to confusion and possibly loss of revenue as people rush to register www.coke.co.ie :)

IEDR will not allow any high level domain names that are used by other countries or that could be used to bypass the .ie
.com.ie
.eu.ie
.co.ie
.net.ie
.org.ie

and so forth.
God grant me the Serenity to Accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the Difference.

Restrictions on getting a .ie domain?

Postby elmviz » Sat Jan 06, 2007 2:43 pm

while i'm on a roll, just wondering is there any restrictions on getting a .ie domain? Do I need to have a company registration number or can anyone get one?

Yes, I'm afraid so. You can see the requirements online @ http://www.webworld.ie/domains/iereq.php

If you have any other questions just let us know.
