Helm Questions & Problems

Postby Morradichi » Fri Sep 04, 2009 12:38 pm

Just getting my site up and running after transferring it over from another provider. The site is up and running but Helm is giving me some problems.

First off, no matter what I do I can't change passwords once I'm logged into Helm. Logging in isn't a problem in itself, but when setting or trying to change passwords for FTP or email it seems to default back to some password that's already there. I can go in, change the settings but as soon as the page says that 'settings have been updated' it automatically goes back to the password that was in before I tried to change it. This is a problem as I can't set my email password and as a result I can't receive emails.

Also, when trying to set up forwarding emails, it lets me forward to one address only. One of my emails needs to forward to two addresses but Helm won't but let me do that. Is there a way to get it to forward to multiple addresses? Finally, there is no way to set up a mailing list which is important as it's a band site and I had over 700 names on the list previously which I need to input back in.

I'm new to Helm and probably a bit spoiled having being used to using HSphere in the past, but it seems to be very limited in what it lets us do.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks

HI Morradichi,

Whats your domain name? It sounds like your domain name isn't pointing to the right account but I'll need to double check this for you.

Setting up mailing lists isn't a problem, you need to do this through your email control panel. You can do this online @ http://mail.yourdomain.com ... you need to use the user mail@yourdomain.com which is the site admin.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for this. I can get in and change passwords in the Smatermail control panel, but there's nowhere to set up a mailing list.

The domain is celtic-legacy.com and I'm still having problems. I tried to send a mail from the main email address and it came back with a delivery failure message saying the recipient doesn't exist, even though it does. The address can receive mails but won't send any.

I'm getting a bit frustrated with this to be honest. I can't seem to get the email working, it should be easy enough to do but just won't work.

HI Morradichi,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you on this, I had to do some research on this one & I found out that our version of Helm does not support mailing lists. We will be upgrading from Helm 3 to Helm 4 over the next couple of months which does support mailing lists but in the mean time I have some other options for you.

Option 1) If you send me the mailing list details I'll set it up manually for you. You can see all the variables needed here :

http://help.smartertools.com/smartermai ... rview.aspx

Option 2) You could use a free php mailing list script.

http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_S ... ing_Lists/

If you need help setting these up please let me know and I'll do my best to explain everything.

On your email problem, could you tell me what error message your getting? What email address were you trying to send the message to? I did a quick test on your email and it appears to be working ok for me. I was able to send email to: & from: your domain. We have a flash tutorial for setting up email here :

Outlook Express: http://www.webworld.ie/members/flash/email/email_OE.htm
Thunderbird: http://www.webworld.ie/members/flash/em ... erbird.htm
Microsoft Outlook: http://www.webworld.ie/members/flash/em ... ok2003.htm

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Thanks

Hi Dave,

Thanks for looking into this for me.

The email seems to be a problem with the Thunderbird mail client. I've checked the mail server settings and it all points to the correct locations. I have been using Thunderbird for years with the previous company and figured it was just a case of checking the mail server was pointing to the correct site, which it is. I can still receive emails but if I reply to sender or compose a new message I get one of a few different messages.

1. <no such user here> even though it does
2. SMTP server is not responding
3. Greylisted, please try again in 120 seconds
4. Authentication required to relay message
5. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your server setting is correct or contact your network administrator.

So as you can imagine I'm a bit stumped as to why the mails won't send.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,

It looks like SMTP authentication isn't enabled in your email client. In Outlook Express you can do this here :

Tools ==> Accounts ==> Select your email account and click on Properties ==> Servers Tab ==> Tick "My server requires authentication".

Some ISP's don't use SMTP authentication but this is very unsecure. The links above to the flash tutorials will show you how to update other emails clients. Let me know if you have any questions or if you need further assistance.
Thanks
